You have decided that you want to get fit and your local gym has some great membership deals on but you are still undecided as to whether you should sign up.

A gym membership can be a great investment in your health, an environment with trained fitness professionals with the expertise to support you in improving your fitness.

The first thing you will need to establish are, what your fitness goals are and whether you can achieve them in a gym.

A good gym should be well ventilated and reasonably spacious. It should have a good number and variety of machines and free weights that you can safely use. If you are also interested in studio classes, then you’ll need to look for a gym with varied classes at different levels and times that you can attend.

Some gyms offer a free pass to trial them before you commit, this might be something worth considering.

Other things that you need to check before joining a gym are:

  • Do the opening hours fit into your schedule, so whether you want to go quite early or later can this be accommodated.

  • Is it a clean environment that you will feel comfortable in.

  • Can you get to the gym easily either from work or your home, how far is it.

  • If you are unable to attend the gym due to long term illness or work travel etc can you place your membership temporarily on hold.

  • What is the lock in period and cancellation terms and conditions.

Feel free to add to this list if there are other things that will help you to make a decision.

Now over to you to decide, is a gym membership the right investment for you.

Are you thinking about joining a gym or renewing your membership? What will help you to make a final decision? Thanks for commenting.

Hi Kristiina, thanks for commenting. A 2 week trial is a great incentive as it gives you a chance to try out the gym, possibly some classes too and get a feel for being a member. Hopefully you are happy with the choice you made. Good luck on your fitness journey.
